As Bob Dylan noted, “the times they are a changing.” The manner in which we get information has been transformed. In many kitchens, laptops are opened instead of recipe books. In many offices, computer screens replace newspapers. If you are reading this, it is likely that you write or read a blog of some sort, regularly. The information landscape is morphing.
KAXE Northern Community Radio, once available only to those of us fortunate enough to live in northern Minnesota, is now available worldwide on the Internet. At KAXE, bringing the ideas and values of grassroots media to the Internet in the form of Northern Community Internet seems like a natural progression. Ironically, this venture uses the broad scope of the worldwide web as a means to re-focus on our own communities. Will it succeed? We don’t know, but we have to try. KAXE has succeeded because the people in northern Minnesota think it is important to be a part of a radio station they can call their own. We hope northern Minnesotans feel as strongly about creating community webnews they can call their own as well.
At Northern Community Internet, local news is paramount. Rather than feeding you stories from around the nation, we will serve stories from around the block.
We hope this novel news forum provides an opportunity for you to read and comment on news that affects your life and the lives of your neighbors. We invite feedback and take it seriously. We invite articles and suggestions for articles. At Northern Community Internet the news is by the people, of the people and for the people.
Every eight weeks, the articles will concentrate on a specific issue. Reflecting the current state of our nation, the first umbrella topic is The Economy. Each week, you will find more and more stories in regard to how our communities, businesses, organizations, and individuals are affected by the changing economy.
Our hope here at Northern Community Internet is that you will be enlightened, feel free to comment, and even post stories of your own. Kick your shoes off and stay a while by checking out local blogs and reading the classified ad sections. Stop by frequently. This project is in a seedling stage and will grow best if nourished and tended to by our readers, our neighbors.
