Macrostie Art Center Announces June Exhibitions
MacRostie Art Center is pleased to announce its June 2009 exhibitions. The MacRostie Gallery will feature John Bauer and Heidi Holtan's photographs and audio interviews in "Reveal: to uncover: make visible." In the Minnesota Gallery will be "Visual Notes from Between the Kinks in a Passageway," a collection of paintings by J. Charles Cox.
John Bauer is a skilled professional photographer, known for his ability to capture not just moments but the essence of people. Bauer has created a photography documentary of the Friday night stock car races in Grand Rapids that shows the passion of a mostly unknown community. Bauer is the Development Director for KAXE - Northern Community Radio in Grand Rapids. Heidi Holtan produces audio stories for KAXE where she edits three to four interviews weekly and has created distinctive audio stories including a feature on island life on Big Sandy Lake off the power grid. Holtan is an Outreach Producer for KAXE.
Bauer and Holtan will present an intimate exhibition with stark black and white photography of individuals in Itasca County coupled with audio recordings. The exhibition, while public, is deeply personal. Each subject is a delight; a surprise and a revelation - not just about each person, but about who we are as individuals.
J. Charles Cox is working towards a MFA in Painting from the University of South Dakota, with a 2010 graduation scheduled. He received his BFA from the University of Minnesota Duluth and AA from Northland Community Technical College in Thief River Falls, MN. His current body of work deals with historical mythologies-much like individual pages from the books carried by archaeologists throughout history. His works begin with questions about the human as it appears in his life ultimately explore his own human condition.
"I am interested in our age-old tendencies-an awareness of those elements of our social interactions that provide a clue, or a key, into the state of the individual-something we all believe we are ."
Cox lives and works in Vermillion, SD.
There will be an opening reception with the artists on Friday, June 5, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at MacRostie Art Center in downtown Grand Rapids. The reception is sponsored by Paul Bunyan Telephone and is free and open to the public.
